This scene is significant to the storyline of ‘The Great Gatsby’ because it shows the first time Nick Carraway meets Jay Gatsby. Prior to this scene, the viewer is unsure of who Gatsby is, so this scene is somewhat mysterious. It gives the viewer an insight into Jay Gatsby’s personality/attitude and life. It is also important because it shows Nick is a more ordinary and reserved character when compared to those around him at Gatsby’s party. The scene shows a typical depiction of the upper class clientele and shows the diversity between the two men. It helps to indicate the time period of where the film is set. Examples of this include the costumes used, hairstyles and makeup, the style of music, the architecture and the kind of language used. We have decided that the era depicted is probably the post-War time period in the 1920’s, which is also the period of Jazz.
Nick Carraway moves to New York in the summer of 1922 to learn about the bond business. He rents a house in the West Egg district of Long Island, a wealthy but unfashionable area. Nick’s neighbor in West Egg is a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby, who lives in a gigantic mansion, and throws extravagant parties every Saturday night.
Nick is different to the other residents of West Egg. He drives out to East Egg one evening for dinner with his cousin Daisy, and her husband Tom, an old friend of Nick’s. Daisy and Tom introduce Nick to Jordan Baker, a young woman whom Nick begins a romantic relationship with. Nick also learns a bit about Daisy and Tom’s marriage, after Jordan tells him that Tom has a lover who lives in the valley of ashes called Myrtle. The valley of ashes is an industrial area between West Egg and New York. Not long after, Nick travels to New York with Tom and Myrtle. At a party in the apartment that Tom keeps for the affair, Myrtle begins to insult Tom about Daisy. Tom responds poorly to this, and breaks her nose.
As the summer progresses, Nick eventually receives an invitation to one of Gatsby’s parties. He sees Jordan Baker at the party, and they meet Jay Gatsby himself. Gatsby is a surprisingly young and has a remarkable smile, and calls everyone “old sport.”
