Costume plays a vital role in this film. The era of the 1920’s is represented by the clothing of characters in our scene. For example, most women are dressed in extravagant ‘flapper’ style dresses, and men are in dinner suits and tuxedos. The extensive wealth of the characters attending Gatsby’s party is expressed through their clothing, as the quality of their garments and fabric types can be easily identified. 1920s evening fashion for females was often characterised by “flapper dressers”. These dressers generally were beaded and coloured with various dark tones such as silvers, blacks, navy, green etc. To accessorise women often wore extravagant headpieces with feathers and a beaded rim. In addition to this long pearl necklaces were a common trend in the 1920s. Women's hairstyles were commonly shaped into a short, neat, wavy bob. In this scene the viewer can also identify women swimsuits. The 1920s bathing costumes were generally a one piece garment which covered the upper thigh.
The men wore tailcoat tuxedos and underneath a white wingtip collar shirt. The trousers were high waisted. To accessorise the look men often wore a top hat, a bow tie, a walking stick or a pocket watch. Mens hair was generally slicked back neatly. Catherine Martin, The Great Gatsby costume designer combined these elements of 1920s evening fashion into this scene. This formed a realistic capture of the time period. |
